Dear Members & Friends

San Rafael Heritage is advocating for historic preservation in the design of the new Downtown San Rafael Transit Center at Fourth and Hetherton Streets. If you have not already done so, we are asking you, your friends and associates to sign the linked petition to reconstruct the original 1929 Northwestern Pacific Railroad Depot as the crown jewel of the Transit Center. Click HERE for the e-petition. Our petition requests the historic depot west façade and east arcade of the old Whistlestop Building be incorporated into a reconstrucred new building that matches the original depot exterior. The rest of the old Whistlestop building will be demolished to make room for the Transit Center.

The petition response is amazing. However, we need more signatures to surpass our goal of 1,000.  Click HERE for the e-petition. You may only sign once.  You can also print the petition and signature page and collect physical signatures and mail the petition to San Rafael Heritage c/o Resilient Shore, 523 4th Street, Suite 226, San Rafael, CA 94901.

Our objective is to show strong community support for the reconstructed 1929 Depot in the Transit Center, a key part of a new civic square and gateway for our downtown. You support will help to guide the Golden Gate Bridge District and the City of San Rafael in their decisions on the design of the project.  The Bridge District has prepared a good conceptual design for the Transit Center, but it can be made excellent. The restored 1929 Depot exterior, including a new interior public space for public art and a café, will make the project a grand addition to our city.

This is city-making at its finest. The reconstructed depot will be the place for visitors and residents of Marin and San Rafael, bus and SMART riders, pedestrians and cyclists. You can help make this vision a reality by signing the petition.

Petition to Save and Rebuild
the 1929 San Rafael Depot

SIGN HERE!

The San Rafael Northwestern Pacific Railroad Depot in 1935. The Depot was built in 1929 to promote interurban rail and ferry service to San Francisco and travel to the Redwood Empire.

Funding for the new transit center will come from a variety of sources, including Regional Measure 3, bridge tolls, and regional, state, and federal dollars. The existing transit center site will be sold to raise part of the funds. Residents and businesses will not pay any additional taxes.

Another way to sign the petition electronically is to point your cell phone's camera at the QR code below and tap on the link that appears automatically to  open the petition. You will also find the full text of the petition, more background information, project budget and a red button to sign the petition.

Please sign the petition to show your support for preserving one of San Rafael’s most visible historic buildings and to break the 1000 signatures finish line!
